November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month
November is Adopt a Senior Pet Month, and you might consider adopting an older pet. Animal shelters have lots of animals and the senior ones are usually harder to place.  When you adopt an older pet, you know that they are fully grown and many have already been trained.

Adopt a Pet - Senior Dog or Cat
Adopt a senior pet now, and they will be settled into your home and lifestyle by the holidays! Read more in our We Talk Pets blog about Adopt a Senior Pet Month.

November is National Pet Diabetes Month
November is also National Diabetes Month, and while this month was originally designed to increase awareness of this common endocrine disease in humans, we need to be aware of the growing prevalence of the disease in dogs and cats also. Untreated, diabetes mellitus can be fatal in dogs and cats.

Clinical signs of diabetes mellitus in dogs and cats include:

  • Excessive thirst
  • Excessive urination
  • Inappropriate urination
  • Weight loss (most commonly over the back), despite an overweight body condition
  • Increased hunger
  • Increased “whiteness” of the lens of the eye due to cataracts
  • Blindness
  • Weakness
  • Lethargy
  • Poor skin condition (like excessive dandruff or an oily hair coat)

If you notice any of these signs (e.g., excessive thirst, excessive urination), please bring your pet into your veterinarian as soon as possible.  With diabetes, the sooner it is diagnosed, the sooner it can be treated.  Also, there’s less of a likelihood of an expensive emergency visit for treatment of diabetic complications.

Happy Thanksgiving
Don’t forget about your family pet as you celebrate Thanksgiving with your family and friends this year.  Just remember not to give your pet chicken or turkey bones, chocolate, or other foods that might be toxic or bad for them.  However, you could give your pet an extra treat to make them feel like part of the family festivities. They might appreciate safe treats like a biscuit, rawhide chews, maybe even some turkey.  Even vegetables, like raw carrots, are good for them. They might even like to play with a ball or catnip mouse!

We want to wish all of our customers and their furry friends a very …..
