Puppy Mill Awareness Day is Sept 19th
FCVC supports those who advocate not purchasing pets from the puppy mill industry. Sadly, puppy mills do still exist. Very often the living conditions in puppy mills are deplorable. Can you help?
A much better option is to buy from a reputable rescue or shelter facility. There are several links at the end of this article for finding a pet through shelters or rescues. We bring this article to you from our friends at AwarenessDay.org:
Started by Last Chance for Animals and other animal activists, Puppy Mill Awareness Day (PMAD) takes place every September to spread awareness of the sad truth behind the puppy mill industry and encourage the public to adopt – not purchase –companion animals.
PMAD started in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in 2004, and now animal advocates across the United States join forces on this day by holding protests, organizing adoption events, and leading marches or walks. Anyone can hold a PMAD event in their hometown. For an extensive list of ways you can participate in your community,
About Puppy Mills
Puppy mills are commercial dog breeding facilities. Every year, more than 2 million puppies are bred in puppy mills and sold for profit, despite the overcrowding in animal shelters and severe overpopulation of dogs.
Dogs in puppy mills are kept in cramped, filthy conditions and may have inadequate food, water, and medical care. Many of the breeder females are bred to death. They give birth to litter after litter and eventually become so beaten down that they cannot conceive anymore. At this point, they are usually killed, since they are no longer able to make their owner money. Puppies are sold to pet stores as young as 8 weeks old, many times with false paperwork and diseases yet to be discovered. Illnesses are frequently overlooked, and animal health documents are easily modified.
The Problem-Puppy Mills
Crowded, squalid conditions, abuse, no veterinary care or socialization, poor food, no clean water, lack of adequate exercise space and more, this is the plight of dogs and cats in “Puppy Mills or “Kitten Mills” (Yes, there are kitten mills too!)
What we do
Educate, rescue, rehabilitate, public and guest speaking, host events, support, and sponsor other “Puppy Mill Awareness Day” events held by other animal welfare and shelter organizations. Raise awareness and educate others about the horrific conditions “Mans Best Friend” is subjected to in Puppy Mills.
Commercial dog breeding facilities
Abusive conditions and practices exist in commercial dog breeding facilities, or “puppy mills,” throughout the United States. As rescuers and animal advocates, we realized this topic was mostly untouched and needed to be addressed on a larger scale. Our mission to rescue and rehabilitate also focuses on educating people wherever and whenever we can.
Rehabilitate
Puppy Mill Awareness Day (PMAD) also rescue and rehabilitate breeding dogs surrendered into our care. We provide much-needed veterinary care, as well as socialization.
Triage
Our organization has excellent working relationships with several veterinarians, who take an active role in the medical triage, care and recovery of many puppy mill survivors. These dogs are nursed back to health, spayed or neutered, and made available for adoption.
Public and guest speaking
Our volunteers are available to speak at different events to help raise awareness about Puppy Mills and the plight these dog and cats face. (Yes, there are kitten mills too!) If you would like to invite a speaker or just find out more information or how you might help our cause, contact kat@awarenessday.org

What is it like inside a Puppy Mill?
Puppy Mill Awareness Day recently received a letter from Jason, a student from Long Island NY asked if we could speak to his class about animal abuse in puppy mills, puppy farms, pet stores etc.
Jason was doing research for a project on the subject and we would have loved to be there to talk with his class in person.
Unfortunately because of commitments and obligations to our dogs and the long distance we were unable to be there in person so we recorded this message.
Thank You, Jason, for contacting us with your questions.
FCVC hopes that you found this information about Puppy Mill Awareness Day enlightening. You can find many pets available for adoption from local shelters like the Larimer Humane Society or Weld County Humane Society or many other rescue facilities. You can tap into finding animals from over 17,000 facilities in the US by using the Adopt-a-Pet widget on our home page or going here – Adopt A Pet Search.
