Animal shelters across the country are once again teaming up with NBC and Telemundo stations to find loving homes for pets in need with the Clear The Shelters pet adoption campaign.

NBC and Telemundo owned stations are teaming up with hundreds of adoption and rescue centers across the country to host Clear the Shelters, a nationwide pet adoption drive in August 2022 that helps find loving homes for animals in need. More than 500,000 pets have found their forever homes since 2015. In 2020, more than 130,000 pet adoptions occurred, and more than $1.2 million was raised.  The stations’ month-long “Adopt & Donate” effort features virtual pet adoptions and ways to donate online to participating organizations. The campaign runs from Aug. 1 through Aug. 31, 2022.

More than 1,400 shelters and rescues have participated in the past. This is how to register your organization in this year’s campaign.

What Is Clear The Shelters?

It is an annual, nationwide pet adoption and shelter donation campaign that is spearheaded by NBCUniversal Local, a division of NBCUniversal. Each year, NBCUniversal Local’s NBC- and Telemundo-owned stations, plus affiliated stations, partner with animal shelters and rescues in their communities to host Clear The Shelters events.

How Did Clear The Shelters Begin?

NBCUniversal Local’s Clear The Shelters campaign was inspired by a 2014 North Texas pet adoption event hosted by NBC 5/KXAS and Telemundo 39/KXTX and dozens of area shelters that resulted in the most adopted pets in one day for North Texas. Since 2015, NBCUniversal Local’s Clear The Shelters pet adoption campaign has resulted in more than a half-million pets finding new homes.

Help all month long

Hill’s Charities – ‘This year has been unique, which is why we’re doing things a little different this time around. Clear the Shelters 2022 is a month-long event with several ways you can participate. Here’s how you can help.”

NBCUniversal Local, Greater Good Charities, The Animal Rescue Site and Hill’s Pet Nutrition are partnering on two special life-saving pet airlifts expected to include approximately 200 at-risk cats and dogs on Aug. 2 and Aug. 30 to coincide with Clear The Shelters, NBCUniversal Local’s annual pet adoption and donation campaign that runs Aug. 1 to 31.

The Clear The Shelters airlifts will focus on cats and dogs from overpopulated sites in Florida and Louisiana, and will include vulnerable pets, like asymptomatic heartworm positive shelter dogs, homeless cats and large dogs. The pets will be transported to sites in Massachusetts and New Jersey, where they will be evaluated and receive needed medical care before being put up for adoption.

The airlifts are part of Greater Good Charities’ Good Flights program and funded by Hill’s Pet Nutrition and The Animal Rescue Site. The special missions are scheduled to celebrate the monthlong 2022 Clear The Shelters campaign, when NBC and Telemundo owned and affiliated stations across the U.S. and Puerto Rico partner with shelters and rescues to promote pet adoption and raise needed funds.
